Open International Czech Championship in the extreme quadrathlon
22. 07. 2018
After a year break, we took part in our favourite race – the Welzl quadrathlon which takes place in Zábřeh upon Morava, the Czech Republic. This race is specific because of its disciplines. Compared to other traditional triathlon races, there is one additional discipline – roller skating, and the order of the disciplines is different.
Running and swimming whetted our appetite
The opening 4-kilometre run was spiced up by two fords, one designed to be run through and the other to be swum across. Any and I reached the Nemilka dam at a slower pace, being aware that the tougher parts were still ahead of us.
We completed the swimming part without any major problems. I got out of the water in second position and from the first transition area, we set out for the roller skating part as a group of three.
Roller skates can give you real hard times
I was actually enjoying the first part of the track. In the second part, however, my lower back started to ache and I was not able to ride in an ideal position. I had to keep strengthening my back all the time and while letting a faster skater in front of me pass, I lost my balance and ended up in the ditch. I reached the second transition area third, losing only a few seconds from second place. Any literally went through hell on the skates and dropped to fourth position.
I turned up the heat on the mountain bike
In the beginning, I was fighting for second place but when we were approaching the hill, I was struggling more with my back than with the other riders. Eventually I was only trying to hold third position, which, without many difficulties, I did. Any, on the mountain bike, swiftly moved up to third position but the higher positions were too far to catch up after her great time loss from the roller skating part, so she took the bronze medal at the finish. Vojta Bednardský and Zuzka Skalická dominated the race.
The organizers did a great job and organized a fantastic race with an unforgettable atmosphere. Any promises she will work hard on her roller skating skills and next year she will take the title.
